Oil on Canvas with copper leaf – Night Vision – 2017
Walking around Thedden Grange, Hampshire at night during winter; observing filtering moonlight and the gentle yet intense, rich colours of dark hedgerows dwarfed against the architectural trees. Recovering from a lingering illness, the soul was lifted by the evening sky and intense remembering of what colours were seen. The moon with its radiating warmth was achieved with copper leaf and layers of glaze applied and merged into a blue, grey, ochre sky.
Hedgerows at night morph into intense jumbles of texture, fighting to be seen, as lethal as barbed wire were expressed with thick rich texture applied by a palette knife. The tree leaning out of the composition helped give the sense of bleak but fascinating yet slightly eeriness of the English landscape is at night.
