Oil on canvas with gold leaf – Branching Out – 2017
Beautiful sculptural trees are seen on a walk behind Thedden Farm, Hampshire in early spring, just before the burst of new leaves. Painted after ‘Expansive Spring’. Uneven distribution of branches within each tree made architectural, fascinating and slightly unbalanced view as more growth was seen on the left. The power of nature to burst awake from the Winter’s long sleep helps give a fresh eye annually. Fields in front, full of history, awash with flint, create texture against a smooth ploughed field. Early growth is shown with light yellow greens separated from the subtle textured sky and foreground by a thin strip of gold leaf to describe low light and colour of a lingering winter. A pale light sun tries to emerge behind trees is symbolic of short days desperate to be longer.
